Xbox operating income sees massive drop for first quarter

Microsoft has just announced its first-quarter earnings for the period ending on September 30th 2012. Sadly for Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division, which is responsible for the Xbox 360 games console, and interactive entertainment business, saw revenues year-over-year at $1.95 billion. The biggest news seems to revolve around the company’s operating income which significantly dropped¬† and is down 94 percent to just $19 million.¬† Shipments of the Xbox 360 console dipped from 2.3 million to 1.7 million units for the period.

The numbers have been attributed to the comparison with last year’s massive release of Gears of War 3 with no comparable software for the same period this year. However, with Halo 4, Windows 8 and the Surface releasing next month and beyond they are likely to be a big winners for the company.
