Xbox One becomes fastest selling console in the US

Microsoft has revealed rather awkwardly that the Xbox One has become the fastest selling console for the month of November according to official NPD figures.  Over a 9 day period the Xbox One was selling in excess of 101,000 units per day putting it ahead of its rivals.  This is good news for Microsoft as it proves the consoles are selling despite stiff competition from Sony’s PS4 which sold a million units in the US and Canada within its first 24 hours. Logistically, the figures whilst correct, don’t take into account the supply and demand issues both companies face considering the Xbox One launched in 13 countries, and the PS4 in 32. Once the dust has settled, it will be interesting to see where the numbers rest, but for now, the going’s good for both, and perhaps better for Microsoft given the higher premium.

November 2013 NPD highlights include:

  • Total retail spend on the Xbox platform (Xbox One and Xbox 360) in November (hardware, software and accessories) reached $1.21 billion, the most for any console in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group).
  • During the month of November, Xbox (Xbox One and Xbox 360) held five of the top 10 spots on the console game title list (Source: NPD Group).
  • During the month of November, Xbox One sold nearly three times as many units compared to Xbox 360 in the U.S. during its November 2005 launch (Source: NPD Group).
