Resequenced Gameplay Preview – Sci-Fi Action Adventure Game

Today we’re taking a look at the upcoming action role-playing game, Resequenced which is being developed by lone developer Based on the Play. The game is coming to PC via Steam Early access and is also being planned for an Xbox one and PS4 release.

So, to explain the basics of the story you play as a college student called Lux Hart who travels to her parent’s home and comes across some inter-dimensional oddities. After a brief look around she is whisked away into orbit around the Earth inside a spacecraft which is home to The Redaction Commission – a shadowy organisation with unspeakable out of this world powers. Cutting a long story short, Lux is enlisted into their ranks to embark on a mission to find her parents who are secret agents working for the Redaction Commission. Using alien technology which alters DNA, Lux is “re-sequenced” and given some special powers which enable her to cast magic attacks on the living such as Incinerate, Freeze, Shock and Invoke. And so the adventure begins.

Bearing in mind this is a preview and not a full review, there is a lot to like about what is available at present despite some rough edges here and there. The 6 -8 hour story takes Lux to many locations which all have a different theme. The very first level Lux explores is set in the middle-east and offers an open landscape which she can freely explore. However, thanks to an AI device implanted in her head – which acts as radar and communications amongst other things – she is often directed to specific tasks so you’re not just left high and dry. Lux talks to a selection of key characters, collects mission critical items and also can hunt down optional collectors items which include outfits and XP rewards for completing tasks. The outfits especially are useful because each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. There are quite a number of them too (27 so far) and come in a range of styles, such as killer clown, Captain America and Space Adventurer to name but a few. Lux can also change her clothing at any time and if she feels like a different hair style or colour can change that too. It would be nice though to see outfits automatically chosen to suit the level she is on with alternatives buried away as collectables. Hopefully something like this will be added at a later date.

Players can level-up Lux’s basic stats such as health, stamina and DNA attack cooldown times for example but can also level-up weapons such as a pistol, rifle and shotgun which she collects through the story. So it is quite neat being able to switch up one’s approach on the fly during combat. However, the DNA powers are the most damaging. The combat elements do need to be refined though because at present the game feels more like a turn-based role-playing game rather than action. Sure, Lux can move freely during combat, but it’s an effective strategy to just stand on the spot casting out DNA attacks until the enemies drop. We’re told the combat is to be revised which is encouraging.

Lux’s adventure takes her to many places which all look rather distinctive whether that’s a snowy pathway in the mountains to a sci-fi themed city. There is enough variety here to keep players hooked. There are also a number of dialogue sequences which are filled with witty remarks, in fact there is a certain tongue-in-cheek flavour to the overall story and conversations which is cool.

Re-Sequenced is years of work for lone developer Based on the Play and as it stands there is an impressive amount of content on offer making for an enjoyable romp. With a little more refinement with regards to the combat and perhaps some more tasks to complete during the campaign, Re-Sequenced is well worth keeping an eye on. As mentioned it releases on Steam Early Access on August 30th (for $7.99)and is planned for a console release further down the line.
