Indie devs can now self publish on Xbox One

After much deliberation and mixed messages, Microsoft has now said that indie developers can use the Xbox One console as the dev kit to produce games and more importantly self publish which opens the doors to developers for getting their games out to the public. Previously Microsoft’s stance would have left many indie developers out in the cold, but this reversal is good news all round. However, some developers are a little skeptical still based on their experiences with the company in the past. Fez creator Phil Fish seems to believe Microsoft’s stance is reactionary to the PS4.  Hopefully, this reversal marks a change where it’s an open arms approach to getting more indie developers on board.

Speaking to Engadget, Microsoft’s Marc Whitten said:

”Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. We’ll have more details on the program and the timeline at Gamescom in August.”
