Battle X Gameplay Single Player

Battle X from Naviworks Co.Ltd. is a VR game wave shooter experience for solo players and competitive action for multi-player. It has a sci-fi military theme and works on the Rift, Vive and other HMDs. Take a look at our Battle X gameplay video which shows off the tutorial, co-op mission and single player story in VR.

In the tutorial you can shoot static targets with a number of weapons. These include an RPG,assault rifle, shotgun,Bow,sniper rifle and pistol. Toss in a grenade and you’re all set. Interestingly, you have to grab clips from your belt to reload and hold most weapons with two hands to get them steady whilst aiming. With the sniper rifle, the scope works well for accurate shooting. There is not much to do in the tutorial, but you do get to see Jennifer up close.

In this version there weren’t any other players online to jump into a game with, so we opted for a look at the co-op mission (played solo). This is basically a non-story themed wave shooter with enemies coming from all sides. We have to reiterate that a room-scale setup is ideal here, or at least have room for full 360 degree turning. The Steam store page does suggest you can play seated but there is a mechanic where replenishing health is accomplished by crouching. Well, that’s not easy to do if you are seated, and put you at a disadvantage.

The main single player story mode offers various scenes alongside a plot which you can either skip or digest. You’re rooted to the spot and can only lean to avoid fire. This is a bit of a let-down considering there is full movement in the tutorial and menu area. Obviously this is for the multiplayer which we didn’t get to play due to no other players.

Battle X is rough around the edges, has some forced voice acting and doesn’t really stand out amongst other wave shooters. Whilst the graphics look good, the end result doesn’t inspire confidence. It’s likely the multiplayer fares better, but again there are other games which probably do things better like Pavlov or Onward. Therefore it’s not easy to recommend this game in its current state. Hopefully the developers can improve things over time and adding bots (which are coming soon) will make the multiplayer more accessible. So until then, we will wait and see how things pan out. At least some of the character models look rather nice!
