Toukiden Kiwami PC Version Locked at 30 FPS

Koei Temco released their rather cool action role playing game Toukiden Kiwami PC via Steam today following on from the original PS Vita and more recent PS4 release. We gave the PS4 version a whopping 9/10 in our review (see video below) and cited it as one of developer Omega Force’s best games to date. The studio is well known for its Samurai and Dynasty Warriors series. It appears though the game is following in the footsteps of a recent Batman in terms of how the game plays on PC with a 30 frames per second lock which isn’t going down too well with the PC masses. Coupled with quite a high asking price of £49.99 and the reception is not as good as we’d have hoped. It’s perhaps easy for developers to claim 30 FPS offers a more cinematic experience when dealing with the limited power of games consoles, but PC is another field entirely as systems can range from low spec to ultra high. Cutting off one of the benefits of PC gaming isn’t a very good start as the platform is all about having bespoke options and it seems Toukiden Kiwami would benefit greatly from running at 60 frames per second or more. Either way, what with Batman Arkham Knight offering a similar lock and now this, we hope it’s not the start of a trend for new releases. Hopefully a patch or some tinkering with the game’s config settings can boost the visual output.

About Toukiden Kiwami:

Set in a beautiful, yet tormented world inspired by various historical periods of Japan, this extremely immersive rpg tells the tale of humanity’s last stand for survival against powerful demons (Oni).

In Toukiden, Oni have always hid in the shadows and aimed to torment mankind. Through history, a secret caste of warriors, the Slayers, have been trained to dispose of the demonic threat before it could consume the world. However, an event called the ‘Awakening’ caused rifts to appear in space and time. Through those rifts places that had long disappeared from the world resurfaced, and with them came hordes of demons that started to relentlessly hunt humans. These demons would consume the souls of those they killed and imprison the ones of brave heroes. Using these souls, Oni can regenerate at a rapid rate and only Slayers are trained in the proper way to battle them.

The player is cast in the role of a new recruit to the Slayer sect and must complete various missions, strengthen his or her relationships with the other warriors in the village, and eventually do battle with the largest of the Oni to banish them back to their dimension and free the souls of the heroes they’ve trapped. In turn, when these souls are free, they stay with the player and provide a variety of equippable abilities.

Visually stunning, this game boasts an extensive character creation mode, a multitude of new weapon types (over 1500), each of which can be forged and upgraded to the player’s preferences, while it also features 300 fallen heroes (Mitama) whose rescued souls help strengthen the player’s team.

‘Toukiden: Kiwami’ will also include an extensive multiplayer mode. The player is always encouraged to tackle battles with the most powerful Oni as part of a group and there is a choice between a number of NPC Slayers or, preferably, a cooperative multiplayer mode that allows for a team of up to four Slayers to hunt and banish a demon together!
