For Honor’s Lack of Sex Appeal Blurs the Line Between Male and Female Characters

Ubisoft’s For Honor avoids sex appeal with its female characters in favour of practicality and a juxtaposed equality between the sexes. However, the results whilst naturally will be favourable to some gamers isn’t as forward thinking as you might expect because it means there’s little distinction between the male and female warrior. This might have been the remit from Jason Vandenberghe and team but it paints a potential state of affairs if the ideal becomes a more widespread trend. There’s possibly a growing ideal from some Western developers that female characters can’t be taken seriously if they are overtly open to sexualization. In our view we believe this is an excuse for poor character development and with better writing the looks of the character become immaterial if there’s a decent script or more in-depth characterization. The design pendulum swings both ways though, so it’s a shame not all developers are offering choice for their audiences where those who want the character to look more appealing for their tastes can opt to do so. Take a look at the video which shows the results of a game where sexualiztion is absent in favour of equality.
